Law Enforcement Torch Run polar plunge returns to Peoria
The event supported the Special Olympics Illinois athletes across the state on Saturday.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge made its return to Peoria on Saturday. The morning consisted of warm sunshine for the plungers jumping in cold 23 degree Fahrenheit pool water.
The event was held at Kelleher’s Irish Pub on 619 SW. Water St. Over 100 participants took the plunge this year, more than doubled last year’s numbers.
“It’s fantastic. Technically all this money that’s raised eventually comes to me,” said Sharon Russell, the assistant director of finance for Special Olympics Illinois. “So when I’m out here and I’m seeing these people just doing what they’re doing to give money to help over 22,000 athletes, especially Special Olympics Illinois, it’s great.”

Russell was the final plunger of the morning that featured various groups that included Peoria Police, Pekin Police, a gym team, a bar team and many individual entries.
Costumes and belly flops were highly encouraged, and they did not disappoint either. Including Top Gun, Spider-Man, Winnie-The-Pooh, dinosaurs and unicorns were all on display at the Polar Plunge.
“It’s always enjoyable to help out a good cause and the water wasn’t too bad and it was a beautiful day out,” said Ryan, who was one of the many plungers.
Events are well-supported
The Polar Plunge, one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, raised $19,785 for the Special Olympics Illinois that will go towards year-round training and competition, as well as leadership, personal development and health education opportunities.
“We’re hoping overall state-wide, we want to hit $2 million. Last year we were at $1.9 million, so just a little bit more of a push and hopefully we can hit $2 million state-wide,” said Russell.
Russell also noted the proceeds will help with equipment, training for coaches and overall with the lives of the athletes.
“This money changes lives, it really and truly does,” said Russell.
