EHS department prepares students for Job Fair
Just before Bradley hosts its first Career Fair of the semester, students in the EHS department gathered to talk about some things to know before an interview.
The Health Science Organization on campus hosted an “Interview Tips and Tricks” meeting to help students prepare for the upcoming Job Fair. Marissa Perez, a career peer advisor for the Smith Career Center showed a presentation on the do’s and dont’s when in an interview.
The night first opened with discussion around the importance of an interview. The Career Center pulled together some feedback from the employers who will be present at the Job Fair as to what they are looking for in an interview. Perez touched base on Caterpillar, the world’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment.
She then highlighted three important elements that are essential to an interview: etiquette, ethics and communication. Perez dived deeper in etiquette, focusing on the importance of body language and apparel. Perez highlighted how important body language when trying to pick up on character.
Smith Career Center provides videos on how to have a firm handshake, good and bad facial expressions and so many other tutorials. She also pointed out how important it is to be aware of that when an interview is conducted virtually.
“Even through a screen, you want the interview to feel like as if it was in person” Perez shared.
Towards the end of the meeting, questions that should not be asked on the employers end were then discussed. Questions concerning familial status, race, gender or medical questions.
Although interviews were not foreign to any students in the room, junior kinesiology and health science major Isha Patel said it was a great refresher before the job fair. “There were some new things that I learned today that I never thought and it’s helping me prepare for my next interview.”
The Health Science Organization is planning on doing more meetings like this. You can catch them in Westlake or on Hilltop Happenings.
