Higher education is a dynamic field, and institution all throughout the country are facing serious financial difficulties that could jeopardize their long-term survival.
The latest institution to face this hard truth is Bradley University, which is conveniently located in the center of Peoria, Illinois. In response to increasing financial strain, the university has announced significant reductions to its academic programs and staff.
With 15 programs being cut Bradley University is confronting a pivotal moment as it implements significant reductions to its academic majors and workforce, driven by a convergence of financial constraints, evolving student preferences, and strategic imperatives.
How are students at Bradley University navigating the Winds of Change in Higher Education?
A combination of economic challenges, such as reduced state financing, rising operating expenses, and decreasing enrollment, have affected colleges and universities for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic's economic effects solely made these problems worse, placing more pressure on institutional budgets and accelerating already-existing trends toward digital transformation and a $13 million dollar budget cut for Bradley University.
Universities and colleges across the country have been forced to reconsider their established strategies and adjust to a new reality determined by increased competition, shifting demographics, and changing expectations from their students.
Sophomore Student Valerie Mercado says
“I find it very inconvenient for this event to have occurred, being we are a school of less than 50,000 students who pay for tuition to come to a private university being Bradley and for them to just cut these majors is very unfortunate.”

More than 50 plus students gathered around Lydia’s statues to Protest against Bradley''s decision to make major cuts and fire staff who have been a professor at the institution for more than a decade.
Sophomore Fashion & Design student Deon Dontez relays.
“Being one of the many students with my major being cut has been a Roller coaster and seeing all the students behind their professors protesting against this unfair decision has been really eye opening on the real problem behind it.”
While trying to balance this news, Deon has made the sacrifice to continue his education at Bradley though he is unsure of the future being his degree will probably not be accepts after graduation as its will no longer exists at Bradley coming Fall 2024.
“There have been many attempts made by Bradley to try and accommodate everyone involved mainly staff who have no plan B regarding where they will be at next semester.”
Student Valerie Mercado shares her thoughts on Bradley’s major and staff cuts.
What is the Impact on Bradley’s Academic Landscape?
These financial changes have a significant impact and are changing Bradley University's academic environment. A number of majors, from specialized programs to long-standing curriculum mainstays, are scheduled for discontinuationscheduled for discontinuation. Affected major students now have unclear futures ahead of them as they frantically reorganize their course schedules and forge new directions.
“Bradley has been offering a lot of staff financial packages letting some professors finish their teachings til 2027.”
Mercado agrees that besides all that has been going on Bradley has been trying their best to accommodate those involved.
The university community has also experienced a sense of unrest as a result of the staff post reduction. Many of the faculty members have worked at Bradley for many years, and they are facing layoffs and restructurings. The university's identity is supported by its institutional memory and feeling of continuity, both of which are undermined by the departure of experienced educators from the faculty.
In the wake of Bradley University's announcement regarding major cuts and staff reductions, students have responded with a mixture of concerns, frustration, and determination. Many students are understandably worried about the impact these changes will have on their academic careers and future prospects.
For some, the elimination of certain majors has thrown their academic plans into disarray, forcing them to reconsider their course of study and potentially delaying their graduation timelines. Others are concerned about the broader implications of these cuts for the overall quality of education and student experience at Bradley.
How are students Navigating the Uncertain Terrain of Major cuts?
In response to these concerns, Bradley University has taken several steps to mitigate the impact of its budget cuts on both students and staff. Firstly, the university has launched an extensive outreach effort to provide support and guidance to students affected by the elimination of majors.
Academic advisors and faculty members are working closely with students to help them explore alternative pathways to achieve their academic and career goals. Additionally, the university has pledged to honor its commitments to current students, ensuring that they will have access to the courses and resources needed to complete their degrees in a timely manner.
“The impact that these changes will have on the affected faculty, staff, and students is not lost on us. We understand the uncertainty and concern that many of you may be feeling during this time of transition. That's why we've made it a priority to provide information and support to those affected by these changes”

Bradley University has implemented measures to support affected staff members during this challenging time. While layoffs and restructurings are never easy, the university is committed to treating impacted employees with dignity and respect.
Affected staff members are being provided with resources and assistance to help them transition to new opportunities, whether within or outside of the university. Additionally, the university is exploring alternative cost-saving measures to minimize the need for further layoffs and preserve jobs wherever possible.
“Throughout this process, we have remained committed to transparency, ensuring that all affected individuals have access to resources and assistance. Our goal is to minimize the disruption to your academic and professional lives as much as possible and to support you through this challenging period.” Said student Mercado.
Through a proactive approach to addressing these obstacles and fostering a culture of adaptability and perseverance, establishments such as Bradley University are able to flourish throughout hardships.
